Over the past few decades concerns about energy efficiency and sustainability have led some builders to reexamine alternative construction materials and methods. Some of these methods represent recycled ideas from the past; others are the result of recent technological innovation. After a brief overview of the history of construction, this class will examine a number of alternative construction methods and materials (including adobe, cob, rammed earth, SIPs, ICFs, straw bale, and various aspects of “earthships”), many of which require limited skill, simple tools, and relatively little expense.
