The design and construction of buildings need not be mysterious. This course will provide students with a hands-on understanding of the basic tools and techniques necessary to transform concepts into physical structures. Knowledge of the basics of the process, including graphic representation of an original idea (using of Google SketchUp© – free, downloadable, and user-friendly 3D modeling software – and pencil and paper) and familiarity with structure and materials (including recent alternatives such as straw bale and rammed-earth construction) will be the goal of the class. Each student will be encouraged to develop their own project, whether a shed, a gazebo, a barn, a house, or whatever, and carry its design and planning as far as they desire, from initial sketch to detailed plans for an architect or contractor.
