There are many choices to be made when selecting a career field. Because the choices can be confusing, exciting, scary and important all at once, students are encouraged to begin the process early in their academic careers. The Career Services Office at Fort Lewis College is dedicated to assisting students and alumni with making these decisions.

Appointments

Students can obtain help by scheduling an appointment. Appointments with a professional career counselor are available to all students and alumni to discuss any career issue. To schedule an appointment either stop by the Career Services Office, 230 Miller Student Center, or call 247-7562. All appointments are half an hour. Longer appointments may be scheduled if necessary.

Appointments can be made to discuss any career/life issue including but not limited to the following topics or issues:

Selecting a Major or Minor  You may receive assistance in making a decision about your academic and/or career goals. We have resources that will help you learn about yourself and about your options in order to make decisions that are exciting to you.

Selecting a Career Direction  You may receive assistance in making a decision about your academic and/or career goals. We have resources that will help you learn about yourself and about your options in order to make decisions that are exciting to you.

Assessments  We offer a variety of assessment instruments, ranging in cost from $2.00 to $25.00 for FLC students and alumni, which help you focus on career information. You must schedule an appointment prior to taking any assessment.

Job Search

There is no single right way to conduct a job search. You will find many situations that require you to make a decision, or use your judgment instead of following a prescribed process. The strategy of the Career Services Office is to help you evaluate yourself and your options thereby leading you to a good choice of career for yourself.

Graduate School Information  If you intend to attend graduate school, the planning process should ideally begin in the junior year depending upon when you plan to pursue more education. Materials related to the graduate school search are available in the Resource Center. Of course, the earlier you begin the process the more time you will have to implement activities that will enhance your options and increase the likelihood that you will be selected into the graduate school program of your choice.
