Selecting a Career Direction

Feel like you're going in all directions at once? Not sure what to do with your life?

Whether you know what you want to study or not, these questions may present themselves again and again throughout your academic experience. Sometimes it is an easy process and sometimes it takes time and effort to reach a decision.

We encourage you to begin the process of selecting a career direction in your first year of college. The sooner you make your decision, the more focused your activities can be. Classes have more relevance typically and therefore you are more motivated to study.

The Career Services Office has many resources, programs, events and services to help you in achieving this decision. Some factors related to career satisfaction for you to consider are your interests, values and skills.

Interests

Consider your interests when choosing your career direction, as it will be more likely that you'll enjoy your work.  To inquire about vocational assessments that can assist you in clarifying your interests, contact Career Services, 970-247-7562.

Values

Select a career option that is aligned with your values.  For example, if being honest is important to you and your work requires that you not be completely honest, this creates a dissonance within you.  There are exercises in the Career Resource Center that you can use, and the FOCUS assessment program can also help you with values clarification.

Skills

Identify you skills and then narrow it down to the skills you enjoy and do well. Don't overlook skills that are gained in extracurricular activities or in the classroom.  You may contact Career Services, 970-247-7562, to set up an appointment with a career counselor to help you with skill assessment.
