Sport Administration Internship Process

First Step

Establish Your Internship File

Once you have been admitted to the Sports Administration program, you are eligible to establish an internship file with Career Services.  All 5 items below must be completed and should be submitted to Career Services, 3rd Floor Reed Library.  If you have not yet applied to the Exercise Science Program but would like to do so, go to the Exercise Science webpage for information.

    1. On-line Application – This initiates the internship file for you in Career Services.
    2. Resume – You will need a professional resume before you can apply for Sports Administration internship positions.  Schedule an appointment in the Career Services Office to develop a clean, concise resume that documents your experience, education and skills.  You may also use the on-line resources to develop your resume.  Click here for resources to help you develop your resume, cover letter, and more. 
    3. GPA/Transcripts You may obtain your transcripts from the Records Office located in Miller Student Center. Official transcripts must be obtained through the Registrar's Office.
    4. Letter of Recommendation Two letters of recommendation are required.  One character reference from an adult mentor and one FLC faculty reference about professional potential.

    5. Letter of application – Written letter of application in approved business format stating objectives of the internship experience.  Again, you may schedule an appointment in the Career Services Office for assistance in writing this letter or use the on-line assistance.

    6. Once your internship file is complete and approved, Career Services will forward your file to the Sports Administration Internship advisor, Dr. Paul Peterson, at 970-247-7481 who is located in Gym 139.  You may then contact Dr. Petersen to discuss possible placement opportunitities.  Dr. Petersen must approve all internship placements.

If Approved, Additional Required Documents

Job Description (pdf: fill out on-line and then print) – A job description must be completed and signed by both you, the student intern, and your internship supervisor.  The signed job description should then be submitted to the Sport Administration Internship Advisor, for final approval.

Student/Employer Work Agreement (pdf: print and fill out) – this is a record of the agreement with the employer showing when you will work and any additional expectations.

 

Register for Credit – Once your file is complete and your Job Description has been approved, contact the Internship Advisor for an override to register for the E.S. 455 Internship in Sport Administration.

College/Agency Contract Agreement – (pending)

For Your Employer

There are expectations of the employer (see Employer Guidelines). You, the student, will be expected to discuss the above items with him or her.  In addition, the employer is expected to complete a final performance evaluation (see #3 below).

Expectations during the Experience

Because this is also an academic experience, there are several academic requirements that must be met before a grade will be assigned.  Follow theExercise Science Sport Administration Internship course syllabus (E.S. 455) for details. The following items are expected to be completed:

    1. Daily Log Book and Weekly Intern Self-Assessment (pdf: print and fill out) – Each week of your internship, you are to detail your experience to help you process what you are learning.  Please alert the Internship Advisor about any problems you may be experiencing.  These weekly reports are to be signed by the intern and agency supervisor and submitted to the Internship Advisor in person, via fax or regular mail and are due each Monday.

    2. Weekly Agency Supervisor Evaluation of Intern (pdf: print and give to your supervisor for completion) – The agency supervisor and intern will meet once a week for an oral evaluation to review the intern’s job performance during that week.  The intern is responsible for securing a meeting time with the supervisor.  The agency supervisor is responsible for mailing or faxing weekly written evaluations to the E.S. Sport Administration Faculty Advisor.

    3. Final Agency Supervisor Evaluation of Intern (pdf: print and give to your supervisor for completion) – This is to be completed by your supervisor at the close of your internship experience and submitted to the Internship Advisor.

    4. Internship Portfolio Presentation – Please refer to the course syllabus and portfolio rubric for detailed guidelines.  

    5. Student Evaluation of Work Assignment (pdf: print and fill out) – Complete this form when you are finished with your internship and submit it to the E. S. Sport Administration Internship Advisor after your portfolio presentation.

Final Evaluation E.S. 455 Grade

The final evaluation/grade is compiled by the Internship Advisor and will be based on the completion and quality of the daily log book, weekly intern self-assessment, weekly agency supervisor evaluation of intern, final agency supervisor evaluation of intern, and portfolio presentation.  You will receive your grade when you have completed all of the requirements, listed above.

 

Student work that does not meet academic requirements will be returned and no grade assigned until the work is completed.
