Networking

One of the most important activities and skills that you can acquire for your job search is the art of networking. Meeting people in all types of situations and places is a definite asset. You never know when you may meet the person who will have the perfect job for you.

Everyone can learn networking skills, even those who are shy. Many of the events sponsored by the Career Services Office are geared for networking opportunities. The annual Career Days provide opportunities in informal settings to meet and talk with employers. These are easy settings, because employers are on-campus and ready to help you through the possibly difficult task of introducing yourself to a stranger.

You can conduct Informational Interviews as well. These are interviews that you set up to meet with employers to explore and research organizations. An Informational Interview is a bit more formal and requires that you take the first step on your own.

Networking can be done through email or letters. The advantages are that you can take some time to write the letter and be thorough in your presentations. Also, the employer can respond at their convenience, although it is possible that the employer may not respond.

The Career Services Office can assist you in getting started with networking by scheduling an appointment.
