Majors in Agriculture
Students wishing to major in the agricultural sciences at FLC have two degree
options. One is a two year associate degree. This program is designed primarily for
students who plan to pursue production agriculture after graduation. The only four year agriculture major offered at FLC is the agricultural business option. Students
completing this major receive an accredited degree in business administration with an emphasis in agriculture. Follow the links below to find out more about course
requirements for each of these degrees.

Associate of Arts in Agriculture
A two year degree program leading to an Associate of Arts degree in Agricultural Science. This program is designed to fill the needs of those students pursuing an agricultural career on a farm, ranch or other agriculture-oriented business. Students may decide to concentrate in animal science, agricultural business or agronomy.

Bachelor of Business Administration with Agricultural Business Option
As a cooperative effort between the Agriculture Program and the School of Business Administration, a four-year degree program is available for those students who are interested in professional careers in the agribusiness sector. See the School of Business Administration "Agricultural Business option" section of this catalog for more information.

Other Agriculture Degree Options

Minor in Agriculture
A number of students at FLC choose to obtain a minor in agriculture. For example,
someone with a major in environmental biology might pursue a minor in agriculture since a number of important environmental issues relate to agricultural production.

Guaranteed Transfer Program
The first option, a guaranteed transfer program with Colorado State University (CSU), is available for students who wish to pursue a four-year program leading to a bachelor's degree in agriculture. Students must complete the prescribed coursework at Fort Lewis College and must maintain a minimum grade point average during the freshman and sophomore years to be eligible for full transfer as a junior at CSU. The guaranteed transfer program offers the following specializations and areas of concentration.

A) Agronomy
Production Management
Crop Science
International Agronomy
Soil Science
Soil Resources and Conseration

B) Animal Science
Science
Industry

C) Agricultural Business

Student-Constructed Major
The third option available in agriculture is a student-constructed major. This option
allows students to develop a four-year degree program through both the Agriculture Program and another program which offers a four-year degree. For example, a student interested in agriculture and economics can develop a major in Agricultural Economics. Agricultural Marketing, Agricultural Chemistry and Agricultural Administration are examples of other student-constructed majors developed and completed by students who have pursued this program option.

Pre-Veterinary Medicine Curriculum Guide
Students interested in applying to vet school are encouraged to work toward a degree within a selected department at Fort Lewis College while taking classes that satisfy the pre-vet course requirements. This recommendation is made because the pre-veterinary medicine curriculum is not a degree program. The suggested coursework sequence is for prospective applicants to the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Fort Lewis College can prepare you for many exciting careers in Biology or Biology related fields, such as Environmental Studies or the Health Professions. We offer four Bachelor of Science degree biology options: General Biology, Environmental Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, and Biology for Secondary Education.

Both government and industry have considerable demand for people trained in the biological sciences and for which a bachelor's degree is sufficient. Administrative and professional careers may be found in government service and with a variety of conservation and recreation agencies at both state and federal levels. Laboratory and technical work is available with industry and with several government agencies. Some sales positions, especially with pharmaceutical houses, require a biology background. There is a considerable demand for secondary school teachers with certification in biology. Many positions for biologists require a graduate degree for which a liberal arts biology major is an excellent background.
