INTERNSHIP IN AGRICULTURE

Ag370

General Description

  • Experiential learning is a crucial aspect of any curriculum. The agricultural internship program provides an opportunity for agriculture students at Fort Lewis College to gain experience that simply cannot be provided in either the classroom or laboratory.

Objective

  • The overall objective of the internship in agriculture program is to provide students with an opportunity to gain professional experience through an off-campus training program.
  • Secondary objectives are to assist students in evaluating their own career objectives and to provide cooperators with an opportunity to evaluate the employment potential of the student intern.

Program guidelines

  • A maximum of 3 credits may be applied toward graduation.
  • Internships may be either programs previously arranged between the department and a cooperator, or a program developed by a student and an off-campus employer that is approved by the agriculture department.
  • The minimum requirements for students to participate in the internship praogram are sophomore standing and a cumulative GPA or 2.75 or above. Some internships may have additional requirements, such as a higher cumulative GPA, or a specific background of course work.
  • Each program is regulated by a "Memorandum or Agreement" which is approved and signed by the student, the on-campus advisor, the cooperator, and the Biology/Agriculture/Forestry department chair.
  • The approved "Memorandum or Agreement" must be completed by pre-registation time of the term during which the internship will take place. This may not be completed on line. Contact Dr. Phil Shuler, 730 Berndt Hall.

Student responsibilities

  • The student is responsible for making arrangements for the "Memorandum of Agreement" to be completed and signed. A completed copy will be provided to the cooperator, the on-campus advisior and the Biology/Agriculture/Forestry department chair.
  • The student is responsible for arranging transportation to and from the place of employment, and for any housing or board required.
  • Unless otherwise provided by the employer, the student is responsible for all personal insurace including auto insurance, workman's compensation, and liability insureance. Previous rulings have indicated that the internship program does not fall under the protection of the Governmental Immunity Act [C.R.S. 24-10-101, et seq.] or the State of Colorado self-insurance liability protection [Part 15, Tital 24, C.R.S.]. It may, therefore, be necessary for the student to obtain private coverage at their expense.
