What's New in the Department of Agriculture

There have been several notable projects going on in the FLC Agriculture Department.

One is the construction of a straw bale greenhouse at the Colorado State University San Juan Basin Reserach Center. Another is the creation of a web site devoted to the history and current usage of the former FLC campus, also known as the "Old Fort" Home Page. This was conducted under the direction of Beth La Shell.

Also, various permaculture projects have been started for demonstration of the permaculture technique.

Beth LaShell and Phil Shuler are now in year 4 of a 5 year study looking at the effect of grazing with goats, spraying herbicide, and beneficial insects on Musk Thistle, Canadian Thistle, Yellow Toadflax and Spotted Knapweed.

These are only a few of the many new developments at the San Juan Basin Research Station.

Permaculture

Tom Riesing and Christie Berven have been very helpful in creating several permaculture guilds for demonstration and experimentation purposes. One of the newest guilds is an Apricot guild containing Apricot trees, Mountain Mahogany, Buffalo Berry and Siberian Pea Shrub.

Cardboard forms the base for the permaculture guild which is then covered with soil and straw.
