Academic Programs

The Biology Department at Fort Lewis College offers 4 different degree options: Environmental Biology, General Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Teacher Education in Biology.

Degree Options

  • Environmental Biology Option:
    This option is appropriate for students who wish to pursue a career in environmental consulting, resource management, environmental biology, and wildlife biology or wildlife management at local, state, and Federal levels. With careful selection from a menu of courses, this degree will fully qualify our students as wildlife biologists for the Federal government.

  • General Biology:
    This option is best suited for those who plan on teaching at the secondary level, for going on to graduate training in any area of biology, or for the health care professions (physician, veterinarian, dentist, allied health). This option lets you choose the greatest number of elective biology courses.

  • Molecular and Cellular Biology:
    The Cellular and Molecular Biology option is designed to prepare students for graduate study in cell and molecular biology or to find employment in the biotechnology and health care industries. Students with this major are highly sought after in forensics technology, pharmaceutical development, and industries involving bioinformatics and gene discovery. Many students find that this option fulfulls the requirements for postgraduate work leading to careers in health care, form medicine to naturopathy. This is a lab/bench science revolving around current recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, and biolmolecular analysis.

  • Teacher Education:
    This option is for students who wish to pursue a career in secondary science education. Please check the education option in the Fort Lewis College catalog. A certain number of science courses are coupled with a set of education courses. This option requires careful and early planning.
