Winter 2008 Courses:

  • History 171: Survey of East Asian Civilization II
    There are two sections of this course in the Winter 2008 semester:
         TR  9:30--10:30 a.m.     OR     MWF  1:25--2:20 p.m.
    This survey course is to offer an introduction to cultures and civilizations of Asia. The major focus will be intellectual and cultural history. Political, social, and economic perspective will also be incorporated. By looking at history and dynamics of East Asian civilizations, we will better understand modern and contemporary East Asian politics, cultures, and societies whose importance is rising.

  • History 355: East Asian Popular Religion
    MWF  10:55 a.m.--12:05 p.m.
    This course is to provide a deep understanding of cultural, religious, and philosophical practices of East Asians including popularized Confucianism, ancestor cult, Daoism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Shinto, and other forms of religions. We will be examining both primary and secondary materials about pilgrimages, sacred sites, rituals and myths, progressing from ancient to contemporary periods. Readings will include five classic novels and writings on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean religions. Reading of these works will illuminate not only religious and cultural but also social, economic, and political dimensions of popular religions in East Asian societies. The class format includes lecturing, discussion, and documentary films.
