Latino College Day

Who: 9th through 12th graders from Colorado and all the Four Corners   

What: Latino College Day is a fun and easy way to celebrate your Hispanic heritage while learning more about what Fort Lewis College has to offer academically and socially. We also offer a free workshop to help you fill out your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)!

When: February 15, 2014 *Campus tours are available at anytime specifically for Latino students. Registration starts at 8:15 a.m. with events beginning at 9 a.m., with lunch followed by informational workshop at El Centro.

Where: Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado

Why: To benefit Hispanic students in the four corners region and offer a hands on college experience to potential students

**Please note that Latino College Day participants are invited to stay for an up-close personal look at our Hispano Center, our students, faculty and staff along with valuable tips to for their success in college.


12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch with family & El Centro friends (Cafeteria)

1:30-2:00 p.m.

“The Conundrum of Identity: Latino, Chicano, Hispanic, and all of the above” Seminar led by Dr. Catalina Aguilar, Modern Languages

This 30-minute lecture will take you on an exploration about what the different identifiers mean. The myopic perception that it is a monolithic population because of certain sociocultural/political and sociological experiences will be discussed.

2:00-2:30 p.m. Show Me the Money $$ Workshop/FAFSA Scholarship Tips: located in El Centro

Financial Aid representatives will direct those especially interested in learning more about the financial aid application to a more in-depth session in the library. Bring your tax returns and file your FAFSA today!

2:00-2:30 Dreamer Tips: located in Rio Grande conference room

If you do not qualify for federal financial aid, and have a deferred action card, we will provide information at this session.

2:30-3:00 p.m. Mapa de Vida Workshop led by Hope Crespo and Magaly Torres:

The “mapa de vida” activity is a “map of life” activity where participants use art and language to develop areas where they want to aim for success. Successful college students, graduates, and professionals are deliberate about outcomes and goals. This visualization process is a technique used to articulate your dreams into reality!

3:00-4:00 p.m.

Fiesta & Social Hour at El Centro where refreshments and musica will be provided!
