Policy

Cancellation Appeals Policy

Institutional scholarships are cancelled for the following reasons:

  • Failure by student to accept scholarship award by Census Date*;
  • Failure to meet disbursement criteria in a Fall or Spring semester*;
  • Failure to meet renewal criteria after evaluation at end of Spring semester*;
  • Failure to attend continuously during length of award*;
  • Exceeding the length of the award (120 credits or eight Fall and Spring semesters, whichever comes first, for most awards)*;
  • Receipt of full funding of tuition expenses by outside agency, for tuition merit awards*;
  • Discovery that student has an earned baccalaureate degree.

The reasons for cancellation that may be appealed are marked with a *.

Grounds for Appeal

Cancellation Due to Failure to Meet Disbursement Criteria

Allowable grounds for appeal:

  • Enrollment in fewer than 12 credits in final semester because fewer than 12 credits are required to complete graduation requirements.
  • Enrollment in fewer than 12 credits in a Fall or Spring semester due to documented death of a family member, injury or illness of student or other compelling unforeseen circumstances.

Cancellation Due to Failure to Meet Renewal Criteria

Allowable grounds for appeal:

  • Documented death of a family member, injury or illness of the student, or other compelling unforeseen circumstances.
  • Achievement of renewal criteria without benefit of the institutional scholarship.

Cancellation Due to Failure to Attend Continuously During Length of Award

Allowable grounds for appeal:

  • Documented death of a family member, injury or illness of the student, or other compelling unforeseen circumstances;
  • Religious service;
  • Military service.

Cancellation Due to Exceeding Length of Award

Allowable grounds for appeal:

  • Student’s declared program length, measured in credits, is greater than 120 credits, or measured in semesters, is longer than eight semesters.

Cancellation Due to Receipt of Full Funding of Tuition Expenses by Outside Agency

Allowable grounds for appeal:

  • Documentation of loss of funding by outside agency.

Award Amount Appeals Policy

Appeals for a higher scholarship award based on a change of CCHE Admission Index or cumulative college grade point average after the date of admission are not allowed.

Appeals to restore a reduced scholarship amount based on documented loss of partial benefits for tuition expenses from an outside agency are allowed.

Appeals Procedure

Students with grounds for appeal should submit by the published deadline an appeals packet consisting of:

Appeal packets may be submitted in four ways, but must be received by the published deadline:

  • Hand delivered to the Office of Admission & Advising in Kroeger Hall;
  • Emailed to scholarships@fortlewis.edu with subject line “Scholarship Appeal for [Student’s Name]."
  • Faxed to 970-247-7179
  • Mailed to: Office of Advising & Admission, Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301

Incomplete or late appeal packets will not be reviewed.

Deadlines for Appeals for Reinstatement in Fall 2014

These are the deadlines to submit an appeal to be reviewed by the Scholarship Appeals Committee:

  • Noon, Monday, May 12, 2014
  • Noon, Monday, June 16, 2014
  • Noon, Monday, July 7, 2014
  • Noon, Monday, August 11, 2014

Review Process

Appeal packets will be reviewed by the Scholarship Appeals Committee shortly after each deadline. The committee will render one of the following decisions:

  • Deferred, for further research;
  • Denied;
  • Denied with conditions that must be fulfilled while student attends without benefit of scholarship prior to re-appeal;
  • Approved for immediate reinstatement of full scholarship amount (with or without conditions);
  • Approved for immediate reinstatement of partial scholarship amount (with or without conditions).

Decisions of the Scholarship Appeals Committee are final.

Notification of Outcomes of Appeals Process

Students will be notified of the committee’s decision as soon as possible via their Fort Lewis College email address.

Reinstated scholarship amounts will be posted on the student’s WebOPUS account.
