ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

NIH-MINORITY ACCESS TO RESEARCH CAREERS (NIH-MARC) AWARD

To be eligible for the Research Trainee Program, students:

  • Must be enrolled at Fort Lewis College
  • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident or a native of the U.S. Pacific Islands or U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Must be an ethnic minority, defined as Native American, African American, Hispanic, or Pacific Islander 
  • Should be majoring in a scientific discipline such as Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Anthropology, Psychology, Exercise Science, or Mathematics
  • Should have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher with at least 60 credit hours earned
  • Must be able to graduate in two years
  • Should have two semesters or one summer of faculty-directed research

In addition to providing students with an opportunity to conduct faculty-mentored research at least 12 hours/week during the academic year and full time during the summer months MARC U*STAR Awardees will receive:

  • a monthly stipend for 12 months
  • payment for tuition and fees
  • funding for travel to scientific meetings
  • funding for research supplies and materials
  • per diem for travel, housing and food while at a research university for one summer

An application with professional/personal statement and official transcript is required for the following SOBA Scholarships.  The application form is obtained from the SOBA Dean's Office or can be accessed on-line here .  The completed application and attachments should be returned to Lisa Taylor, 132 Education/Business Hall,970-247-7294, LMTAYLOR@FORTLEWIS.EDU. Applicants may apply for all SOBA scholarships simultaneously by using one application form.  All scholarship applicants must complete a statement of financial need.  Some SOBA scholarships have additional requirements such as a scholarship-specific essay.  Application deadline:  February 27, 2015.  Recipients will be selected by SOBA Faculty Scholarship Committee.  All applicants notified of decisions in writing no later than March 13, 2015.  These scholarships are for students in any declared SOBA major including Accounting, Business Administration (any option), Economics (any option), and Marketing unless scholarship is specifically restricted to one or more of the declared SOBA majors/options.
