Why does junk mail reach me?
As junk mail increases so do the risks to the College. We update our spam filter definition files daily, but the bad guys are getting smarter and faster. Keeping up with this problem requires updating our filters and your help.

What can I do to help?
First, be very cautious as you read your email. Information Technology will never ask you for personal information so that is the biggest clue to help you identify junk mail. If an email is trying to create a sense of urgency, this is also indicative of spam. Reporting junk mail to Information Technology is the best way you can help combat this growing problem. As you report junk mail that gets through to you, we can target those messages and block them.

How do I know that the suspicious mail should be reported to IT?
First read the message with a critical eye. Ask yourself the following questions to help determine if this should be sent to IT.

  1. Is the mail trying to create a sense of urgency?
  2. Is the mail from somebody you do not know?
  3. Is the mail asking you to click on a link?
  4. Is the mail asking you to send personal information?
  5. Is the mail sophisticated enough to fool somebody?

How do I report junk mail to IT?
The email message must be sent to IT as an attachment. Below are instructions for Microsoft Outlook.

Windows

  1. Open Outlook and highlight the junk message you wish to send
  2. Press CTRL + ALT + "F" (Notice this creates a new message and attaches the junk message.)
  3. Address the email to junk@fortlewis.edu
  4. Compose your message to IT and hit send

Macintosh  

  1. Open Outlook and highlight the junk message you wish to send
  2. Click the paperclip attachment button on the home tab
  3. Address the email to junk@fortlewis.edu
  4. Compose your message to IT and hit send
