Dr. Veronika Furst, Professor of Mathematics

Phone: (970)-247-7535
Email: Furst_V@fortlewis.edu

Education:
B.A./M.A. University of Colorado at Boulder, 2001
Ph.D.  University of Colorado at Boulder, 2006

MARC Involvement:
Dr. Furst is member of the MARC Steering Committee.  She is available to mentor Pre-MARC and MARC scholars or to help facilitate a match between another member of the Mathematics faculty and a potential MARC scholar.  Dr. Furst’s primary research interest is in a branch of mathematics known as abstract harmonic analysis.  In particular, she studies wavelets, frames and multiresolution analyses.  Over the next year, she plans to develop projects in these areas accessible to undergraduates, with applications to image processing.

Education:
B.S., 2002, University of Georgia, Athens
Ph.D., 2007, University of Texas, Austin

MARC Involvement:
Dr. Miller currently serves on the MARC Steering Committee. He is available to mentor both Pre-MARC and MARC students. His research interests include synthetic organic chemistry with an emphasis on the laboratory preparation of biologically active natural products (drugs) with potential to treat viral infections and cancer. Most recently, Dr. Miller’s research group synthesized the antiviral compounds sattabacin and sattazolin. Serena Mancha, MARC Scholar, and Dr. David Blake studied the antiviral activity of sattabacin against Varcella Zoster Virus (VZV) infection in human fibroblast cells.
