Accomplishments include:
- Earned is DMA in Woodwind Performance at the University of Georgia.
- Received his BME from Furman University
- Earned his MM in performance from the University of South Carolina.
- While living in the Southeast, Owens frequently performed with regional orchestras in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
- In October 2006, Owens performed William Davis's Rhapsody for Oboe and Band and Mozart's Concerto for Bassoon as an unprecedented dual-winner of the annual University of Georgia Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition.
- Recently, Douglas has given performances at North American Saxophone Alliance conferences in Greensboro, North Carolina (2004), Hammond, Louisiana (2007), and Columbia, South Carolina (2008).
- Owens has also given recent performances with the Georgia Double Reed Ensemble at International Double Reed Society conferences in Muncie, Indiana (2006) and in Provo, Utah (2008).
- As a teaching assistant at the University of Georgia, Owens had the opportunity to work with Stephen Valdez in the teaching of the History and Analysis of Rock and Roll.
- Before moving to Durango, Owens served on the faculties of South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina at Aiken, and Presbyterian College. Douglas has studied with Rebecca Nagel, Dwight Manning (oboe), Robert Chesebro, Carol Cope-Lowe, William Davis (bassoon), Clifford Leaman, and Kenneth Fischer (saxophone).
- Additionally, Owens has also studied flute with Constance Lane and Angela Jones-Reus, as well as clarinet with Douglas Graham and D. Ray McClellan.
