This is a supplemental resource packet for students researching financial aid opportunities for Native Americans. Included you will find funding sources for both undergraduate and graduate studies.

It is recommended that you directly contact any of the sources you are interested in for updated deadlines, requirements, application materials, etc. This information varies from year to year and certain scholarships may not be currently offered.

Remember that you must always complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive any financial aid at Fort Lewis College. Please complete the FAFSA as early as possible and remember to renew it each year that you are applying for aid.

Comments: The National Future Farmers of America offers several scholarships for students in their senior year of high school or first year of college. Typically, students must be interested in pursuing disciplines associated with the agricultural industry. Scholarship recipients are determined by the Scholarship Committee based on detailed qualifications as listed in the agreements between the sponsors and the National FFA. All scholarships are in the form of cash awards issued to recipients. Recipients will be asked to provide a copy of their class schedule for their first term in school to serve as documentation of enrollment and pursuing an education above high school.

Comments: While financial need will be considered, dedication and academic standing are more important. To qualify for renewal of the scholarship award, the recipient must submit:

  1. A written statement of financial need and verification of current address.

  2. An official transcript of grades for the last 2 semesters or last 3 quarters of academic work.

  6. Intend to serve Indian People upon completion of professional health care education as a health care provider in the discipline for which the student is taking preparatory courses.

Health Professions Pre-Graduate Requirements:

Comments: The New Mexico Competitive Scholarship was created to encourage out-of-state students who have demonstrated high academic achievement in high school, to enroll in public institutions of higher education in New Mexico.

Amount: Awards vary, but are applied to tuition and fees. This is a state-funded program.

Comments: The purpose of the New Mexico Athletic Scholarships is to help student athletes have access to a higher education in New Mexico. State-funded athletic scholarships are available through the following post secondary institutions. Eastern New Mexico University, New Mexico Highlands University, New Mexico Junior College, New Mexico State University, University of New Mexico, and Western New Mexico University. Each institution determines their own eligibility requirements, but scholarships are available to both residents and non-residents of New Mexico.

LEGISLATIVE ENDOWMENT PROGRAM

Amount: Four-year public institutions may award up to $2500 per student per academic year. Two-year public institutions may award up to $1000 per student per year. Part-time students are eligible for pro-rated awards. Must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Comments: The New Mexico Legislative Endowment Program was created to provide aid for undergraduate students with substantial financial need who are attending public post secondary institutions in New Mexico.

New Mexico residents who are undergraduates attending public post secondary institutions in New Mexico. Qualified applicants must be enrolled at least half-time. Preference is given to returning adult students at two and four year public institutions and transfer students from two-year New Mexico public post secondary institution.

SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Amount: The award is a scholarship for tuition, books, and fees and is based on availability of funds. Applicants must have a combined family income of less than $30,000 per year. If 2 or more family members are enrolled in a post secondary institution, the combined family income is not to exceed $40,000. Are required to submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Comments: The New Mexico Scholars Program was created to encourage New Mexico high school students to attend public or selected private non-profit colleges in New Mexico before their 22nd birthday. The selected private non-profit colleges are the College of Santa Fe, St. John’s College in Santa Fe, or the College of the Southwest.

New Mexico residents who are undergraduates attending public and selected private non-profit post secondary institutions in New Mexico who have not yet turned 22. Applicants must have graduated in the top 5% of their high school class or have obtained a score of 25 on the ACT.

STUDENT INCENTIVE GRANT

Awards: The need-based award varies from $200 to $2500 per year. Part-time students are eligible for pro-rated awards. Applicant is required to submit a FAFSA form.

Comments: The New Mexico Student Incentive Grants were created to provide aid for undergraduate students with substantial financial need who are attending public and selected private non-profit post secondary institutions in New Mexico. New Mexico residents who are undergraduates attending public and selected private non-profit post secondary institutions in New Mexico. Qualified applicants must be enrolled at least half-time.

3 PERCENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Amount: The maximum award is a tuition and required fees waiver. Each applicant is required to submit a FAFSA form.

Comments: The New Mexico 3% Scholarship Program was created to provide aid for undergraduate and graduate students who are attending public post secondary institutions in New Mexico. New Mexico residents who are undergraduates of graduates attending public post secondary institutions in New Mexico. Each post secondary institution establishes its own eligibility requirements.

VIETNAM VETERAN’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Amount: The maximum award includes tuition, required fees, and book allowances for recipients. This is a state-funded program.

Comments: The New Mexico Vietnam Veteran’s Scholarship Program was created to provide aid for Vietnam veterans who are undergraduate and graduate students attending public or selected private non-profit post secondary institutions in New Mexico. Qualified applicants must be enrolled at least half-time. Applicants must be certified by the New Mexico Veteran’s Service Commission.

Comments: The purpose of the New Mexico Child Care Grants program is to ensure that undergraduate and graduate student-parents have access to a higher education in New Mexico. Recipients must be enrolled at least half time in credit bearing courses. Priority is given to New Mexico residents. Each institution determines specific eligibility requirements and the manner of disbursement to student-parents.

NEW MEXICO CHILDREN OF DECEASED MILITARY AND STATE POLICE PERSONNEL SCHOLARSHIP

The SLF Chairman, with the approval of her Section, then presents the application to the National Scholarship Loan Fund Committee together with supporting letters, recent grade transcript, and her own personal evaluation before March 15th of each year.
