Minoring in Native American & Indigenous Studies

The interdisciplinary Native American and Indigenous Studies minor is intended to provide important support for any major a student might select that could lead to a career in or around Indigenous communities or with Native serving institutions.  Students may select courses that compliment their major and contribute to their preparation for careers that demand an understanding of the dynamics of Indigenous communities.  This minor may also be an important basis for graduate studies in addition to any major. 

No more than one course from a student's major may count in any minor.  A student majoring in any discipline other than Native American and Indigenous Studies may complete a minor in native American and Indigenous Studies upon satisfactorily completing the following requirements:

Two Required Courses:

NAIS 110  Introduction to Native American and Indigenous Studies
OR
NAIS 123 American Indian History

AND

NAIS 280 Native Americans in the Modern World
OR
SOC 250 Social Issues in Contemporary Native American Societies

THEN -
Choose at least one course from each distribution area listed for the American Indian Studies Major.

Total Credits Required for Native American and Indigenous Studies Minor:  18 credits

Note:  At least 9 credits must be numbered 300 or above.  Also, NAIS 335 Topics in Indigenous Studies and appropriate 190/390 courses may be used to fulfill one or more of the distribution areas upon approval by the NAIS coordinator.
