FLC Biology professor is first to win national Excellence in Education award

Assistant Professor of Biology Heidi Steltzer is the first recipient of the Sulzman Award for Excellence in Education and Mentoring from the American Geophysical Union. The award acknowledges both creativity in research and leadership in forging the next generation of scientists.

The Sulzman Award is named for the late Elizabeth Sulzman, a scientist and teacher at Oregon State University remembered for her tremendous impact on her students.

For Steltzer, simply reciting information so students can pass a test is does not prepare the scientists of tomorrow. She believes in creating an environment where her students have the chance to take charge of their learning and develop the tools that’ll help them as they progress.
