Road Scholars Team rides for scholarships

Two members of last year's Centennial IHBC Team cross the Silverton finish line in their specialty jerseys.

A hundred and one riders will be combining their love of cycling with their love of Fort Lewis College at this year's annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic when the Fort Lewis College Road Scholars Team races the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge train from Durango to Silverton in the Citizens Tour on Saturday, May 26, 2012.

This special team is a spin-off of last year’s Centennial Team, which was successful in raising more than $7,000 for the Centennial Scholarship Fund at Fort Lewis. Sporting specially designed commemorative jerseys, the Road Scholars Team will be honored by starting at the front of the pack at the starting line near the Strater Hotel on Main Avenue.

The Team is open to Fort Lewis students, alumni, staff, faculty, community members, and supporters. Last year’s team included many prominent FLC faculty, staff, and alumni, including School of Business Administration faculty Doug and Chris Lyon (both are also alumni, and Doug is also a former Durango mayor), 2009 Colorado Professor of the Year Ron Estler, President Dene Kay Thomas' husband, Gordon Thomas, and alum and local business owner Jim Carver.

Registration for the Road Scholars Team begins at midnight on December 1st, 2011 at The cost of $195 includes IHBC registration fees, the jersey, a $50 tax-deductible donation to the Scholarship Fund, and other yet-to-be-named perks.
