Going green has been a way of life at Fort Lewis College for a long time -- it's just comes naturally when you live in a place as beautiful and inspiring as southwestern Colorado. And this summer, the FLC campus has gotten even greener, with several energy- and money-saving projects underway.
Fort Lewis College has been actively improving its sustainability since becoming a charter signatory of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, in 2007. Since then, the colleges' Sustainability Action Plan has led to the construction of "green" buildings, introducing local foods into dining facilities, expanding on-campus recycling, prioritizing recycled products in purchasing, upgrading irrigation efficiency, the installation of a new composter for on-campus dining, and more.

This week, the Fort Lewis College campus will change.
"No Impact Week," part of International No Impact Week, March 19 through March 25, explores low-waste lifestyles by giving students, faculty, and staff ways of actually experiencing and experimenting with changing their habits. The goal of the campus-wide events is to engage more people in low-impact actions and lifestyles.

Caring for the Earth is cool. And that caring on the Fort Lewis College campus makes it one of America's Coolest Schools, says Sierra magazine, the official publication of the Sierra Club, in its October 2011 issue.

Starting this Fall, there is a new nexus of campus life at Fort Lewis. The renovated and expanded Student Union (the grand opening for which will be Tuesday, Sept. 6 -- see sidebar) is now the hub for student entertainment and activities, where the campus community can go to study or read, find inspiration in speakers and lectures, get entertained with movies and performances, or share lunch or a cup of coffee while making life-long friendships and connections with other community members.
