A classroom without walls: 6 FLC students kick off new public-lands internship program

For many of us, a college internship helped forge the direction we would follow in our professional careers. Six Fort Lewis College students received such inspiration this summer through the inaugural Four Corners Federal Lands Internship Program.

Their outdoor classrooms ranged from archaeological sites to alpine meadows and high mountains. Although similar internships have been available since 2008, a recent agreement between federal land agencies and local nonprofits now offers new opportunities.

New Engineering accreditation is mark of excellence

Earning a mark of excellence recognized worldwide, the Fort Lewis College Engineering program has officially received accreditation from ABET, the international accrediting body for applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology programs. The stamp of approval for FLC Engineering comes just as the College is breaking ground for a new Geosciences, Physics and Engineering building. Read the rest of entry »

Roadshow opens the door to great careers for Fort Lewis College accounting students

Like so many other college students, Shane Saginak came to school searching for the right major and career. Luckily, once he arrived at Fort Lewis College from New York, a little bit of advice helped him find his way.

“My advisors told me: ‘You’re organized. You’re smart. Do you want to have a job after school?’” the senior accounting major recalls. “I’m like, ‘Well, yeah.’ So I went into accounting, and I have an offer for an internship coming up this summer and hopefully following that I’ll have a job offer.”

Students aid professor researching lightning on the edge of space

Ask any of the 275 students in the Physics & Engineering Department at Fort Lewis College what a “sprite” is, and they’re probably not going to tell you it’s a soft drink or a green fairy from a mythical land. Their responses might be something more like this:

“A ghostly flash above the clouds.”

“Violent, beautiful bursts of energy.”

“Vertical, red-orangery lightning.”

“A rare occurrence.”
