Youngest Miss Native America promotes arthritis awareness

Nineteen-year-old Fort Lewis College student April Yazza wants to spend the next 12 months encouraging Native women to take care of their joints.

Yazza, who was named Miss Native American USA on August 1, said she grew up watching women sew, cook and clean. When she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis seven months ago, Yazza decided more people needed to know about the disease.

New Engineering accreditation is mark of excellence

Earning a mark of excellence recognized worldwide, the Fort Lewis College Engineering program has officially received accreditation from ABET, the international accrediting body for applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology programs. Students aid professor researching lightning on the edge of space

Ask any of the 275 students in the Physics & Engineering Department at Fort Lewis College what a “sprite” is, and they’re probably not going to tell you it’s a soft drink or a green fairy from a mythical land. Their responses might be something more like this:

“A ghostly flash above the clouds.”

“Violent, beautiful bursts of energy.”

“Vertical, red-orangery lightning.”

“A rare occurrence.”

Fort Lewis College alumnus selected to U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels

One of Fort Lewis College’s own is taking to the skies with the legendary Blue Angels. Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss was named as a F/A-18 demonstration pilot for the Navy’s famous flight squadron. Capt. Kuss is a 2006 graduate of Fort Lewis College with a degree in economics.
