Students aid professor researching lightning on the edge of space

Ask any of the 275 students in the Physics & Engineering Department at Fort Lewis College what a “sprite” is, and they’re probably not going to tell you it’s a soft drink or a green fairy from a mythical land. Their responses might be something more like this:

“A ghostly flash above the clouds.”

“Violent, beautiful bursts of energy.”

“Vertical, red-orangery lightning.”

“A rare occurrence.”

Trip to Hawaii gives students up-close look at volcanoes

If you're a Geology major and want to get a sense of what a volcano is like, then you need to stick your rock hammer into fresh lava. That's what students were able to do over spring break, when Geosciences professors Jim Collier and Lauren Heerschap took a dozen students to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park in March.

History grad shares the power of the liberal arts in award-winning essay

A liberal arts education helps students learn to both speak for themselves as well as listen to different views of the world. So explains Jane Jackson, who graduated from Fort Lewis College in May with a bachelor's degree in History, in her award-winning essay, “Reflections on a College Experience.”

That essay earned Jackson the 2014 Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges' David J. Prior Award. The award recognizes senior-level undergraduates whose academic careers and future goals have been shaped by the transformative power of the liberal arts and sciences. Read the rest of entry »

Dr. Marcelyn Jung named winner of 2014 Achievement Award

Associate Professor of Exercise Science and Gender & Women’s Studies Dr. Marcy Jung’s career at Fort Lewis College is filled with impressive achievements. From the 1988 FLC Volleyball team she coached being inducted into the FLC Athletic Hall of Fame to years spent working on campus wellness initiatives to offering the Commencement invocation each year. It’s accomplishments like these that earned her the 2014-15 Fort Lewis College Achievement Award. Read the rest of entry »
