Finish in Four! program helps students graduate on time and on budget

Completing an undergraduate education in four years can be a challenge. But the rewards can be many -- personal accomplishment, financial savings, and moving on to the next stage of your career-building. “The value of finishing in four years to me is that I'll be able to graduate with minimal debt, while being able to jump into my career as soon as possible,” says Megan Butterman, a freshman from Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Dr. Susan Kraus named winner of 2013 Alice Admire Outstanding Teaching Award

For Dr. Susan Kraus, associate professor of psychology at Fort Lewis College and recipient of the 2013 Alice Admire Outstanding Teaching Award, began, in part, by getting criticized while earning her graduate degrees from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

“As a graduate student, I was chastised for spending too much time mentoring my students, and was pushed to prioritize research,” she recalls. “While I love research, and have not neglected that part of my career, teaching always will be my highest priority.”

Dr. Heidi Steltzer named winner of 2013 New Faculty Award

People are affected by environmental changes. For example, climate warming may lead to more carbon dioxide emissions from Arctic soils to the atmosphere, leading to greater warming, leading to an increase in mosquitoes and a greater risk of diseases carried by mosquitoes for people and wildlife.

“That means that as a society, we need to include these complex interactions across ecological systems in our planning to ensure we can ‘live with’ the conditions we create,” explains Assistant Professor of Biology Heidi Steltzer, recipient of the 2013 New Faculty Award.

Ms. Angela Rochat named winner of 2013 Outstanding Staff Award

At any college or university, there are the faculty who teach and research and there are the staff who get the faculty the resources they need to do the best job they can do. Getting those resources, whether it is grant funding or assistance from the federal government, is the job of Ms. Angela Rochat, director of the Fort Lewis College Office of Sponsored Research and Federal Relations and recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Staff Award.

FLC helps students make good social media decisions

Consider it your first interview.

“It” is what comes up when a potential employer types your name into a search engine or social networking site. Research reveals that more than one-third of employers now conduct online pre-interview searches of potential employees, to either screen out candidates or to prepare for interviews.

That means that these days, having a great resume just isn’t good enough. Job seekers in today’s market have to also consider their online presence – the information that can be gathered about them from readily available internet sources.
