Cycling team rides for #1 three-peat at Road Nationals

The Fort Lewis College Cycling team will be #1 in the nation for the third year in a row if it continues its recent run of successes at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, May 4 - 6 in Ogden, Utah. The event completes the four-discipline collegiate cycling year, which also includes track, mountain biking, and cyclo cross.
 
FLC Cycling is defending as the USA Cycling Division I top-ranked collegiate cycling program in the country, based on the cycling season's overall point totals. Going into the season's final event, FLC Cycling sits atop the standings.
 
"We're looking at some strong competition," says Cycling Director Dave Hagen. "But we've had great racing in the conference all season, so we're going into road nationals with a lot of momentum."

U.S. Senator Udall offers Commencement Address at Fort Lewis College

For 450 Fort Lewis College students, one chapter of their lives culminated and a new one began at FLC’s Spring Commencement on April 28. The newest Fort Lewis alumni walk away with degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural and behavioral sciences, and business.

The Commencement Address was offered by U.S. Senator Mark Udall. Appropriate to the beautiful scenery that surrounds Fort Lewis College, Sen. Udall called upon his past experiences as an outdoorsman to encourage the new graduates to seek out adventure and to not shy away from taking risks.

Outstanding Staff Award: Mr. Roy Horvath

Perhaps the best compliment that a person working in information technology can receive is that no one knows that they’re there. So many of us take for granted the ability to make a phone call or log onto the internet because it seems so automatic. The reality is that it takes people like Mr. Roy Horvath to keep the whole system humming along without skipping a beat.

New Faculty Award: Dr. Justin McBrayer

In Dr. Justin McBrayer’s mind, professors should not profess. They should question. By that he means professors should be active participants in learning by guiding discussion and debate around a topic. Students and professors should learn together.

New Faculty Award: Dr. Erik Juergensmeyer

Ask Dr. Erik Juergensmeyer what he finds most rewarding about teaching at Fort Lewis College and he sums his answer up in one word: “everything.” Dig into just what makes teaching so rewarding for him and he explains how he has seen what he teaches change the way his students look at the world and how they communicate with others. A big part of his teaching philosophy involves training his students in the art of rhetoric.
