| New Environmental Studies Program
Fort Lewis College is launching a new Environmental Studies program to begin Fall 2007. This interdisciplinary degree program will allow you to explore courses in several different departments, including science and math, social sciences, and humanities, within the context of the environment.
The Environmental Studies major will prepare you for graduate studies or careers in environmental management, public policy, government and law, to name a few. You’ll also learn about career and graduate study options through environmental studies courses and community-based learning and research experiences. If you are interested in a career or further study in Environmental Science, there are also environmentally oriented degree options in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics.
In Southwest Colorado, environmental issues have notable impacts on American Indian lands and people. The Environmental Studies major will prepare you for work with American Indian governments which are looking for graduates who are trained in the scientific, political and cultural dimensions of environmental restoration and management.
Regardless of your career goals, the Environmental Studies major will provide you with many opportunities to address environmental issues first-hand, by working within the greater Durango community and conducting original research under the guidance of Fort Lewis College faculty. These hands-on experiences will help you define your career pathway and set you apart from the competition in your post-graduate pursuits.
The Environmental Center at Fort Lewis College is one of the leading environmental student organizations on any college campus – a great resource for students pursuing an Environmental Studies degree. And you can live and study with others on campus who have a common interest in the environment. The Sustainability, Justice, and Cultural Transformation Learning Community was introduced in Fall 2006, and the Learning to Invest in the Future of the Earth (LIFE) Living Community will begin in Fall 2007.
