DURANGO - The legacy left behind by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be the focus of a week’s worth of events at Fort Lewis College beginning January 19, 2009. Durango community members are invited to attend all of the week’s free activities.
The week will commence on Monday with dramatic readings by students of Dr. King’s and other civil rights leaders’ speeches. At 12:15 p.m., the campus and Durango community will join together for a March of Solidarity across campus to the College Union Building Ballroom where a birthday cake will be served in honor of Dr. King. That evening, featured speaker, Dr. Rev. Jamie Washington will lead a discussion on social justice and inclusive communities.
The inauguration of President Barack Obama will be televised in the CUB’s Animas Lounge at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20. At 7:30 p.m., the first part of a three-part series will examine and discuss the film, Race: The Power of an Illusion.
Wednesday evening will featured part two of Race: The Power of an Illusion.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration will conclude on Thursday, January 22, with a discussion led by FLC’s Anti-Defamation League group called CODE RED. The discussion, entitled “Following the Dream,” will take a good look at our society and talk about ways to combat bigotry, prejudice and hate. After the “Following the Dream” discussion, part three of Race: The Power of an Illusion will finish up the week.
