DURANGO - Fall Convocation at Fort Lewis College is a time when incoming freshmen and their families are recognized and welcomed by the College faculty and staff. This year, approximately 800 freshmen will begin their academic careers at Fort Lewis.

The students and parents were welcomed by College representatives including President Brad Bartel, Provost Stephen Roderick, 2008 Miss Hozhoni Margret Talia White and ASFLC President Aaron Elinoff. Congratulations, encouragement and advice were administered.

Fall Convocation speaker, John Herrington, a retired Naval aviator and former astronaut, shared his insights with the audience. Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, was the first Native American to fly and walk in space.

This year’s freshmen class represents the most academically prepared of any class in Fort Lewis College history. The index score, used to determine whether a student will be admitted or not, is computed from a student’s ACT score and GPA. This year’s freshmen class earned an overall index score of 101. That’s compared to a freshmen class overall index score of 92 five years ago.

Fall 2008 marked the beginning of FLC’s more selective admission process and indeed many applicants that would have been accepted in years past were not admitted this year.
