Durango Price Index

This is simplified consumer price index for Durango, the DPI. It is important to note is that the relatively low average income in La Plata County (about two-thirds that of Denver and three-fourths of the State as a whole) and the relatively high housing costs mean that housing dominates the overall cost of living in Durango. In our version of the DPI we follow the Bureau of Labor Statistics method of using average monthly rent to proxy for  "housing equivalents"  rather than purchasing housing with a mortgage. One thing to note, however, is that rents in the area were held artificially low in the 2000s as many homes were purchased as investment properties increasing the supply of rental units pushing prices down.

Two inflation rates are presented from 2001.1 - 2012.2: the annual rate of inflation and the annualized quarterly rate of inflation. In addition we present the overall DPI from 2001 - 2012 in the second column.
