Herbig-Haro 555

Herbig-Haro 555: This is a narrow band image of HH-555, a proto-star showing jets being ejected into the surrounding star-forming gas cloud of the much larger Pelican nebula.

Other Catalogs: HH 555

Date: August 2009
Equipment:
Telescope: Meade 16" Schmidt Cassegrain with f6.3 reducer
Camera: SBIG ST-10XE
Guiding: Meade 5" refractor/DSI Pro/PHD
Filters: AstroDon 6nm narrow band

Exposure: H-alpha: 18x5minutes
[SII]: 15x5minutes
[OIII]: 19x5minutes

Processing Notes: Images were captured in CCDSoft. Reduced and aligned in SSDStack. Combined in Sigma Beta. Imported to Photoshop with an arcsine stretch. The three colors were individually stretched using curves so that their histograms were similar. Dark areas blurred at bit, bright areas sharpened. A small (~25%) minimum filter was applied to the stars - slightly more for [SII] and [OIII] so they would match the H-alpha data. The stars on the H-alpha had a tracking problems that was removed via a layer mask. The individual channels were combined into the final 3-color image.
Scale: 1.0"/pixel

Additional Comments: During these exposures, work was done on various autoguiding issues. All exposures in this image were 5 minutes, but later subframes had significantly better guiding.
