Trips for 2014 will take place the week prior to Freshman Orientation on campus (August 24th-28th) and will be focused on backpacking in the mountains surrounding Durango. Students will travel through rugged canyons, camp in aspen groves, and hike across alpine meadows surrounded by 13,000 foot peaks. In groups of 12 (10 students and 2 leaders) participants will learn the basics of backcountry travel, and how to move and work as a group in the wilderness. These groups will travel, cook, camp and share adventures while taking in the unbelievable landscapes of the southern San Juans.
This area is moderately difficult. Most of the trails are over gradual terrain; however the elevation can exceed 10,000 feet. There are many ridges and peaks that offer outstanding views, but require hiking challenging steep sections.
