President's Statement on Political Diversity

During May of 2004, the Colorado legislature concentrated their efforts on the issue of whether varying political viewpoints are respected at our state's colleges and universities.  In lieu of legislative action, the state's colleges supported the concept of a Memorandum of Understanding, essentially giving to each constituent institution the ability to examine their internal policies and to ensure that academic freedom and constitutional first amendment rights are upheld for students and faculty.

We want to make sure that all Fort Lewis College students know their rights under this Memorandum of Understanding.  Provost Steve Roderick, Vice President for Student Affairs Glenna Sexton, and Coordinator of Judicial Affairs and Equal Opportunity Haeryon Kim have reviewed all of our policies related to student rights. The following links are for students to read and understand.

We want a college campus where we are free to express ourselves; sometimes in unpopular ways.  All parts of our Fort Lewis College community must respect one another.  A free society depends on this critical issue.

In certain cases, complaints can be resolved without filing a formal complaint. To discuss various options and approaches, including filing a formal complaint, please contact the Coordinator of Judicial Affairs and Equal Opportunity, 970-382-6977, 455 Berndt Hall, kim_h@fortlewis.edu.
