A concise review of writing across the curriculum and how this
has now evolved into electronic communication across the curriculum. Faculty
share their experience with using computer-mediated communication - what
they did, what worked, what did not work, what tools they used, what they
plan to do in the future. The examples are across disciplines and across
class size - low and large enrollment. Provides very useful examples
and insights. Thanks to Linda Jorn for this review.

The Educational Technology WebRing (EdTech) is a collection of
educational technology resource sites on the World Wide Web for Higher

which contains links to sites in the following topic areas, among others:
Learning Theories & Models, Curriculum Design & Development, Distance
Education, Assessment, Online Journals/Newsletters
Telecourses, generally, are video course materials that may be
used in a variety of teaching situations - face-to-face classroom teaching,
satellite distributed distance education, possibly web-based asynchronous
distance education. The Adult Learning Service of PBS has created
the Faculty Referral Network to help answer questions about teaching using
these types of materials and in these situations. The following is
taken from ALSs advertisement: "The Faculty Referral Network (FRN)
is a peer group of accomplished, talented, experienced telecourse instructors
from various regions. These faculty are available to answer your
questions about teaching telecourses. Through the FRN, faculty can
get practical advice on selecting, incorporating, adopting, and utilizing
telecourses. They can question their peers on anything from adoption
of a specific telecourse to using telecommunication technology such as
cable systems, ITFS, and computer conferencing. Most questions can
be answered with just one phone call."

WW Norton provides (for a price, of course)
a collection of stand-alone and text-related
resources. Some dozen programs are course-specific
products while others are
cross-curricular products - a word processing
and file sharing program, a free Web-based
service for creating Web pages, including
a private, integrated discussion forum, a
CD-ROM program for creating mulitmedia lectures
for classroom use, and Web-based
discussion forums - hosted on Norton's site.
Of particular interest here are a couple of their guidelines

Fair Use Guidelines For Educational Multimedia: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/ccmcguid.htm
The Consortium of College and University Media Centers was a major player
in bringing different interests to the table to hammer out guidelines for
the use of copyrighted works in multimedia productions. While these
guidelines are fleshed out more than other guidelines from CONFU, they
have not been universally accepted.
Educational Fair Use Guidelines For Distance Learning, Revised
Draft: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/distguid.htm
These Distance Learning Guidelines only tackle fair use to perform
and display others' works in two contexts, live interactive distance learning
classes and delayed transmission of faculty instruction. They do not cover
fair use of (performance of) others' works in online course materials.
CONFU participants felt that these uses were so new that it was hard to
even describe them, let alone describe fair use in this context.
A Proposal For Educational Fair Use Guidelines For Digital Images,
12/3/96 Draft: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/imagguid.htm
This seminar site, operated by Social Science Electronic Publishing,
Inc., focuses on laws as applied in the area of electronic communications.
Their series of lessons http://www.ssrn.com/update/lsn/cyberspace/csl_lessons.html
begins with a dozen short lessons on copyright, but continues with lessons
on privacy, trademark, libel, free speech, contract law, content regulation
(Communications Decency Act), and dispute resolution – all related to electronic
communications.
This site offers some articles on intellectual property rights
law, particularly in regard to new trends and electronic media.
Dr. Kenneth D. Crews, Director of the Copyright Management Center,
has written several interesting articles on copyright:

This article details some of the copyright concerns people have
with distance education situations. Read it carefully to make sure
it fits your situation, because, like so much of the copyright law, it's
fairly specific.

The section on Fair Use http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/copypol2.htm

Rules of Thumb for Digitizing and Using Others' Works in Multimedia
Materials for Educational Purposes: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/copypol2.htm#mm
Rules of Thumb for Digitizing and Using Images for Educational
