A concise review of writing across the curriculum and how this has now evolved into electronic communication across the curriculum. Faculty share their experience with using computer-mediated communication - what they did, what worked, what did not work, what tools they used, what they plan to do in the future. The examples are across disciplines and across class size - low and large enrollment.  Provides very useful examples and insights.  Thanks to Linda Jorn for this review.

Faculty Referral Network:  1-800-257-2578, 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, Eastern Time
Telecourses, generally, are video course materials that may be used in a variety of teaching situations - face-to-face classroom teaching, satellite distributed distance education, possibly web-based asynchronous distance education.  The Adult Learning Service of PBS has created the Faculty Referral Network to help answer questions about teaching using these types of materials and in these situations.  The following is taken from ALSs advertisement:  "The Faculty Referral Network (FRN) is a peer group of accomplished, talented, experienced telecourse instructors from various regions.  These faculty are available to answer your questions about teaching telecourses.  Through the FRN, faculty can get practical advice on selecting, incorporating, adopting, and utilizing telecourses.  They can question their peers on anything from adoption of a specific telecourse to using telecommunication technology such as cable systems, ITFS, and computer conferencing.  Most questions can be answered with just one phone call."

COPYRIGHT AND DISTANCE EDUCATION

Ball State University Copyright and Digital Resources page: http://www.library.bsu.edu/(c)/

Fair Use Guidelines for Asynchronous Internet Courses: http://www.library.bsu.edu/(c)/

CONFU: The Conference on Fair Use
Background information may be read on the University of Texas System web page:
http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/confu.htm
Fair Use Guidelines For Educational Multimedia: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/ccmcguid.htm  The Consortium of College and University Media Centers was a major player in bringing different interests to the table to hammer out guidelines for the use of copyrighted works in multimedia productions.  While these guidelines are fleshed out more than other guidelines from CONFU, they have not been universally accepted.
Educational Fair Use Guidelines For Distance Learning, Revised Draft: http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/distguid.htm
These Distance Learning Guidelines only tackle fair use to perform and display others' works in two contexts, live interactive distance learning classes and delayed transmission of faculty instruction. They do not cover fair use of (performance of) others' works in online course materials. CONFU participants felt that these uses were so new that it was hard to even describe them, let alone describe fair use in this context.
