Prospective Students

ACT Prep Class

Services provided by the program includes the following:

  • Academic, financial, career or personal counseling including advice on entry into secondary or post-secondary education programs
  • Career exploration and aptitude assessment
  • Tutorial services
  • Information on post-secondary education
  • Information on student financial assistance
  • Exposure to college campuses
  • Assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications
  • Assistance preparing for college entrance exams
  • Mentoring programs
  • Special activities for sixth, seventh and eighth graders

The program also benefits parents by:

  • Information on how to help students through the college process
  • Parent meetings and workshops on financial aid, scholarships, vocational school and college admission requirements
  • Continued commitment to help students find success

Who can join?

  1. Attend one of our participating schools:
    • Durango High School
    • Escalante Middle School
    • Pagosa Springs High School
    • Pagosa Springs Junior High School
    • Ignacio High School
    • Ignacio Junior High School
    • Mancos High School
    • Mancos Middle School
    • Montezuma Cortez High School
    • Cortez Middle School
  2. Be at least 11 years of age
  3. Be a U.S. citizen
  4. Meet income requirements or
  5. Be a first generation college student (meaning neither parent has a 4-year college degree)

Highlights from the 2008/2009 FLC TRIO Talent Search program

  • We served 700 students (from Cortez, Mancos, Durango, Ignacio and Pagosa Springs)
  • 96% for our 6th-11th graders advanced to the next grade
  • 96% of our seniors graduated from high school
  • 90% of our seniors applied for admission to a college or vacational school
  • 83% of our seniors applied for financial aid
  • 70% of our graduating seniors entered into a program of post-secondary education in the fall of 2009
