  We Serve Students Who Are:

  • 9th through 12th grade students at Cortez, Durango, and Ignacio High Schools
  • Income eligible (based on federal guidelines) and/or first generation- neither parent has completed a 4-year college degree (preference is given to those who meet both criteria)
  • Motivated and have the potential for academic pursuits but need the encouragement, skill development and academic guidance necessary to go on to college
  • Willing to make a long-term commitment to attending and graduating from college after graduation from high school.

 Academic Year Services:

  • Regular academic, career, and college advising sessions for students at their high school.
  • Mandatory tutoring/after school advising sessions to help students develop study skills and progress academically.
  • Mandatory Saturday Student Sessions for core instruction and workshops (leadership, college prep, etc)
  • Mandatory Saturday Parent Meetings to inform parents of upcoming events and student/program progress.
  • Assistance with career exploration, college admissions, financial aid, scholarship research, and ACT test preparation.
  • College Tours: Educational and cultural trips that expose students to college and vocational schools, career options and diverse cultures.

  • A stipend of up to $40 a month based upon the student’s commitment/participation and attitude in the program and performance in school

Summer Services:  Mandatory intensive six-week summer residential academic enrichment program (Summer Academy)

  • Students live in residence hall Monday-Friday during June and July for six weeks
  • 24-hour adult supervision
  • Morning classes consisting of courses in Math, English, Science, and Foreign Language
  • Afternoon classes consisting of electives such as Music, Cooking and Nutrition, Outdoor Education, College Success and Career Exploration
  • Friday service learning activities and social/cultural enrichment field trips
  • Summer Academy services Upward Bound students already enrolled with the program and attending high schools in Durango, Ignacio, and Cortez. 

 Fort Lewis College Upward Bound Facts

  • More than 80% of students are both low income and potential first generation college students
  • 27% of FLC Upward Bound participants are Native American
  • 43% of FLC Upward Bound participants are Hispanic
  • Upward Bound has a 95% program retention rate;
  • 70% enrolled in college;
  • 100% of Upward Bound students who went to college returned for their sophomore year in college (based on 2010 grads)
  • Students who participate in Upward Bound programs are four times more likely to earn an undergraduate degree than those students from similar backgrounds who did not  participate in a federal TRiO program.
