Dr. Dene Thomas appointed the first Old Fort Steering Committee in September 2010 from a recommendation of the 2010-2011 Old Fort Financial Feasibility Committee. Agendas, minutes and public documents are posted on the website.

Major accomplishments for the Committee were signing an IGA in 2014 that placed all the assets (land, water and infrastructure) in the Hesperus trust which is managed by the State Land Board. An Asset Management Plan was approved in 2016 followed by the signing of a 20-year Beneficial Use Agreement in April 2017.

Since signing the Beneficial Use Agreement, four working groups have been formed replacing the Steering Committee. Those groups include Agriculture, Natural Resources, Historical Preservation and Community/Education.
