Hello, my name is Austin Haire, and I am currently attending New Mexico Military institute. After spending one year here and obtaining my senatorial nomination, I will attend the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. I was selected by the Merchant Marine academy as a sponsored prep, where I am guaranteed an appointment if I keep my grades up while attending NMMI. The Academy sent me to NMMI to prepare me for the rigorous training and academics at the academy. With formations to attend, room and uniform preparations to be made, and more Homework than I have ever had to do, there is no time to mess around. At the Merchant Marine academy, I plan to get a degree in systems engineering. The Academy requires repayment with either military service in any of the different branches or naval reserves as a merchant mariner. I plan to make my repayment in either the Navy or Air force. I would recommend attending one of the five federal military academies to anyone, as they are some of the top schools in the U.S. The Academies teach its cadets important life lessons that other colleges do not.
Kaprice Pribble graduated from Mancos High School in 2013 and now attends Colorado State University. She recently wrote us to say, “I am a member of the Society of Women Engineers, I volunteered in Lyons for flood relief in November, and I was an open option engineering major my first semester and now my major is biomedical and mechanical engineering and I hope to use this degree to go into prosthetics.” We are proud of all of Kaprice’s accomplishments during her freshman year at CSU!
My name is Kathleen Smith, I started participating in Talent Search in seventh grade and participated for six years. Talent Search helped me to get to college when everyone said I wouldn’t make it. I have also been a participant in PAA (Program for Academic Advancement), which is like Talent Search at the college level. I am currently a senior at Fort Lewis College. I am an Interdisciplinary Studies major with an Elementary Education option. I am student teaching at Ignacio Elementary School and am hoping to work there in the future with a K-5 position. I have received the Talent Search Alumni Scholarship for the past three years. Coming from a need-based family I know the importance of finding scholarships that will cut a bit of tuition off of the bills. I will graduate May 3, 2014 with my elementary education licensure, early childhood licensure, and a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Endorsement. I will receive the Dr. Linda Ekman Simmons award of Excellence for Outstanding Future Teachers, specifically the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Program award. I know that anything is possible once someone looks beyond the statistics of who and who should not attend college and everyone should do the same.
My name is Stephanie Walker, and I am a Talent Search Alumnus. I joined talent search in High school, which helped me to complete my college degree. I attended Fort Lewis College and graduated with a Bachelors in Psychology in 2013, Magna Cum Laude honors. Shortly after getting my degree, I got a full time job of my dreams. I am now Recreation Supervisor of Durango Gymnastics. I am also engaged and recently just purchased a home in Durango. I thank Talent Search in all they had done to help me obtain scholarships and motivation to fulfill my College Degree.
