What is the GRE General Test?

The GRE® General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.

Verbal Reasoning — The skills measured include the test taker's ability to

  • analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it
  • analyze relationships among component parts of sentences
  • recognize relationships between words and concepts

Quantitative Reasoning — The skills measured include the test taker's ability to

  • understand basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis
  • reason quantitatively
  • solve problems in a quantitative setting

Analytical Writing — The skills measured include the test taker's ability to

  • articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
  • examine claims and accompanying evidence
  • support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
  • sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
  • control the elements of standard written English

What is the GRE Subject Test?

The GRE® Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in the eight disciplines listed below. Each Subject Test is intended for students who have majored in or have extensive background in that specific area. For some Subject Tests, sub-scores are provided in addition to the total score; these sub-scores indicate the strengths and weaknesses of individual student's preparation, and they may help students plan their future studies.

Who should take the GRE?

Whether you are a student planning to take a GRE® test, a faculty member using GRE® scores, or if you are simply interested in research on GRE® tests, go to http://www.ets.org/gre/. This site contains all the information you will need.

Prospective graduate applicants take the General Test and/or the Subject Tests. GRE® test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in evaluating grades and recommendations.

Any accredited graduate, business or professional school, or any department or division within a school, may require or recommend that its applicants take the General Test, a Subject Test, or both. If approved by the GRE® Board, a non-accredited institution can also receive test takers' scores

How do I register for a GRE test at FLC?

FLC no longer offers the paper-based General GRE®. You may register for the computer based version at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico through the GRE® website: Go to: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register/centers_dates/

If Registering for the GRE Subject test:

  • Select appropriate Subject Test; [Search by Test Center]
  • Select United States of America; Select Colorado; Select Durango, Ft Lewis Coll - 19385
  • Select the appropriate date; fill in personal information.

When you register for a GRE®Test, you will be sent a free Subject Test Practice Book that describes the test in detail. The book also includes test-taking strategies, content specifications, a full-length test and answer key, and information to help you understand the scores you earn. When is the GRE offered at FLC?
