Ray Cramer

Ray E. Cramer was a member of the Indiana University School of Music faculty from fall 1969 through May 2005. In 1982, Cramer was appointed director of bands, and under his leadership the Indiana University Wind Ensemble earned an international reputation for outstanding musical performances, including the 1982 ABA Convention, Indianapolis; the 1984 joint American Bandmasters Association/Japan Bandmasters Association Convention, Tokyo; the 1988 MENC National Convention, Indianapolis; the 1991 National CBDNA Convention in Kansas City, the 1994 National MENC Convention in Cincinnati, the 1995 ABA Convention in Lawrence, Kansas, the 1997 National CBDNA Convention in Athens, Georgia, the 2003 CBDNA National Convention in Minneapolis, MN, a 2000 spring tour to Japan performing in six cities and the All Japan Band Clinic, and a 2003 performance at the Midwest Clinic.

In addition to his administrative responsibilities as the department chairman, Cramer taught graduate courses in wind conducting, history, and literature. He also conducted the University Orchestra for seven years during the fall semester. He is a past national president of the College Band Directors National Association and the American Bandmasters Association and has served as president of the Indiana Bandmasters Association, the North Central Division of CBDNA, and the Big Ten Band Directors Association. He is the current president of the Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra convention held in Chicago each December.

FRIDAY, January 31

You may begin arriving at 12:30. Please drop your students off directly to their rehearsal space so that we may start rehearsing at 1pm.

2:00-3:00 - HS and MS Directors meeting in Jones 253 (Music Education Lab)

3:00-3:20 - Break

3:20-4:45 - Rehearsal

4:50-5:45 - Dinner Break - Student Union Cafeteria

6:00-7:00 - Fort Lewis College Band performance and Master Class with Ray Cramer - (All participants attend - Concert Hall)
7:00-8:30 - Rehearsal


We will pull students from rehearsal beginning at 9:30.

SATURDAY, February 1

Registration Info

Two ways to participate - Audition for top band OR Director recommendation for other bands.

Audition for the top band - Due November 18th

Complete the Auditioned Student Registration Form filling out all information for your auditioning students.

Send in your student's audio audition by email to by November 18.

Use your state's All State Audition materials for consideration in the top band.  Those who audition for the top band but do not make it will automatically be considered for the other bands. If you are unable to send mp3/wav files by email please mail cd's to:

Director Recommendation

Due November 18th

Complete the Non Auditioned Student Registration Form filling out all information for your students.  We will choose up to 15 students (NOT including those who audition for and make the top band) from each school.  This is new as in the past the limit was 15 students across all bands.  You could have 15 in the top band and 15 in the other bands.

Middle School Band by director recommendation only.

Due date is November 7th.
