So many roads
Your BA in Psychology from FLC will serve you well. Psychology provides a foundation for much of what we do in just about any workplace. For careers as varied as marketing and mental health case management, your BA will support your résumé. Your faculty may be able to provide excellent insights into the kinds of directions that best support your interests.
To work in most kinds of mental health counseling, you’ll need at least a MA. You could go a number of directions. The three main tracks are social work (MSW), counseling, where if you pursue licensing, you’ll become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or to continue with Psychology through a Master’s degree or Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). Consider consulting your faculty for more specifics about the different graduate options as you decide which path is best for you.
Most of these programs involve a limited amount of time in on-campus work.
The program is open for application by FLC undergraduates majoring in Psychology, Sociology and Human Services, Criminology and Justice Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Public Health, and Anthropology. Students must meet specific admission criteria.
For the first three years, you are an undergraduate paying tuition to Fort Lewis College. During this time, you’ll complete your Liberal Arts Core requirements and the courses required for your major.
In the fourth year, you’ll enroll in DU’s Four Corners MSW program. You’ll take all your courses in Durango, Colorado. At the end of the fourth year, your DU credits are transferred back to FLC to complete your BA with an August graduation date.
In the fifth year, you are a DU GSSW graduate student. You are awarded your MSW at the end of that year.
The DU program is cohort based on a two-year cycle. Cooperative program students are only admitted at the beginning of each cohort.
The courses offered during the academic year are taught using a variety of technologies: summer intensive courses are taught on-site in the Four Corners region, classes are simulcast and broadcast from Denver, and you’ll take online and hybrid courses.
Both GSSW faculty and local adjunct faculty teach the on-site classes. Students and instructors have online access to the University of Denver Penrose Library.
A full-time Durango-based faculty member serves as site director and offers a local presence, coordinating all aspects of the program. Coordination with a Denver-based Distance Education Director ensures that all aspects of the program are integrated between the University of Denver campus and the on-site Four Corners program.
