Fun Facts

Interesting fact:
My family owns a CrossFit gym in town and we’re all (our two sons and dog included) often there after hours enjoying such a fun sport. I’ve snowboarded for 20+ years and picked up skiing again this past year – and it’s like starting all over again! I love being active and love new challenges, so outside of work, anything I can do to keep healthy, active, and in the outdoors, the happier I am!
Favorite spot on campus:
The bench on the west side of campus at the top of the Sky Steps. The views of town, the Animas Valley, and the La Plata Mountains are just beautiful! This is also where I start and end my lunch hour trail runs around Rim Trail, a three-mile loop around the outside of campus.
Favorite food:
Durango has so many amazing restaurants and I refuse to choose just one! East by Southwest has incredible sushi – try a hand grenade and a rainbow roll, you won’t be disappointed. I also love fast and fresh Mexican/Southwestern food from Zia Taqueria, including their bowls, burritos, and tacos. My guilty pleasure is definitely Cream Bean Berry, a locally made and locally sourced ice cream shop. Their flavors are always changing and they even offer yummy dairy-free options.
Advice for returning students:
Be proud! You might be coming back to Fort Lewis to finish your degree one year or twenty years after you last attended – however long it has been, you are finishing what you started and that is both not easy as well as something to brag about! Take some time to reconnect with campus – find where resources physically reside these days. You’ll want to know where our tutoring centers live, where you can meet with an advisor and discuss financial aid, where you can find health support such as our Counseling, Heath, and Student Life Centers, and perhaps most importantly, where you can find and connect with your professors.  Get your bearings (and let us help you do that!) and then conquer the world!
