Job Duties in Arts & Sciences

Maureen Brandon, DeanMaureen Brandon, Dean

Hiring and evaluating

  • Oversee hiring processes for Arts and Sciences faculty and staff
  • Evaluate performances of tenured/tenure-track faculty, instructors, professional staff members, and classified staff members

Budgets and Resource Allocation

  • Oversee budgets for 24 academic units and the Dean’s Office
  • Manage part-time and temporary instructional budget
  • Oversee budgets and monitor progress of federal grant awards
  • Advocate for Arts and Sciences departments and programs

Curriculum-related Duties

  • Assist academic units with new program development
  • Assist academic units with periodic program reviews and maintaining accreditations
  • Assist academic units with annual program assessment

Grants and Fundraising

  • Assist staff in the Office of Sponsored Programs and Federal Relations and department faculty with grant writing and development of project requests
  • Oversee fundraising efforts for the School of Arts and Sciences, and assist departments with fundraising events

Leadership Duties

  • Represent the School of Arts and Sciences to the community
  • Represent the School of Arts and Sciences on the President’s Cabinet, Deans Council, Budget Committee
  • Lead committees and task forces as assigned by the President or Provost
  • Support, encourage, facilitate undergraduate research across campus
  • Implement Fort Lewis College and School of Arts and Sciences policies, and develop new policies as necessary
  • Work collaboratively with the Academic Affairs administrative team

Student Recruitment and Retention Duties

  • Assist Enrollment Management with recruiting students

Anne McCarthyAnne McCarthy, Associate Dean

  • Approve all exceptions to graduation and grade changes
  • Review and approve all Independent Study petitions and non-scheduled courses
  • First point of contact and resolution for student complaints and disciplinary matters
    • Serve as liaison between faculty and students
    • Consult with and make recommendations to the Dean regarding unresolved issues
  • Manage and approve summer school schedules and payouts
    • Monitor enrollments and work with chairs and program directors to add sections as needed and eliminate under-enrolled sections
    • Track the Arts and Sciences summer school budget
  • Serve as Arts and Sciences liaison to Student Affairs
  • Serve as Director of Undergraduate Research
    • Chair the Undergraduate Research grant review committee
    • Organize the Undergraduate Research Symposium
    • Serve as principle investigator for NSF-STEP (FOCUSS) grant
    • Contact person for COPLAC undergraduate research programs
  • Serve as contact person for departments and programs during summer months
  • Serve as member or chair of selected committees or task forces as assigned by the Dean
  • Regularly brief the Dean on the status of activities and projects
  • Serve as signature authority in the absence of the Dean
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean
