Biology Department - More About Our Program

More About Our Program

The Department of Biology has two separate programs: Biology and Public Health. Each program has its own degree options and requirements. For more information please contact the chair of the program, Dr. Joseph Ortega.

The Biology Department at Fort Lewis College offers four different degree options: General Biology, Environmental Biology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, and Teacher Education in Biology.

General Biology Major

This option is best suited for those who plan on teaching at the secondary level, for going on to graduate training in any area of biology, or for the health care professions (physician, veterinarian, dentist, allied health). This option lets you choose the greatest number of elective biology courses.

Environmental Biology Major

This option is appropriate for students who wish to pursue a career in environmental consulting, resource management, environmental biology, and wildlife biology or wildlife management at local, state, and Federal levels. With careful selection from a menu of courses, this degree will fully qualify our students as wildlife biologists for the Federal government.

Molecular & Cellular Biology Major

The Cellular and Molecular Biology option is designed to prepare students for graduate study in cell and molecular biology or to find employment in the biotechnology and health care industries. Students with this major are highly sought after in forensics technology, pharmaceutical development, and industries involving bioinformatics and gene discovery. Many students find that this option fulfills the requirements for postgraduate work leading to careers in health care, form medicine to naturopathy. This is a lab/bench science revolving around current recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, and biomolecular analysis.

Teacher Education in Biology

This option is for students who wish to pursue a career in secondary science education. Please check the education option in the Fort Lewis College catalog. A certain number of science courses are coupled with a set of education courses. This option requires careful and early planning.
