Fort Lewis College strives to provide a safe and healthy environment for all campus community members and guests.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Surgeon General have classified second-hand smoke as a known human carcinogen; therefore, it is imperative to limit the adverse effects of second-hand smoke and to provide a smoke free environment in and near all Fort Lewis College buildings and facilities.  Additionally, the College must comply with the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act.


A. Definitions

     1.    The term "tobacco" means any product made or derived from tobacco that is intended for human consumption, including any component, part, or accessory of a tobacco product.  This includes, among other products, cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, and smokeless tobacco.

     2.    "Smoking" means the burning or other use of any product, including but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, clove cigarettes, pipe tobacco, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), hookah shisha or any other device, matter or substance that contains tobacco product.

B. There shall be no sale of tobacco or nicotine replacement products such as e-cigarettes on the Fort Lewis College campus with the exception of nicotine cessation product directly through the Fort Lewis College Health Center.

C. There shall be no smoking on Fort Lewis College campus except in designated smoking areas provided by the College.  Individuals using designated smoking areas must extinguish all smoking materials and properly dispose of them before exiting the area.

D. All members of the Fort Lewis College community and visitors to the campus are responsible for compliance with this policy and are encouraged to support the community by assisting in the enforcement of this policy.  Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action and/or criminal penalty under the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, C.R.S. 25-14-208.
