What is it like to be a student at Fort Lewis College? In our "Day in the life" series, we'll explore student life at FLC through the eyes of our students. In this episode, we meet Jake, a senior Biology major who aspires to be a veterinarian. Starting college is more than just beginning classes, making new friends, finding yourself, and growing up. It is also about, for most of us, moving away from home and learning how to live without your family. It is so overwhelming and uncomfortable, yet extraordinarily exciting at the same time. Fort Lewis is enjoying a thirteenth day of sunny skies and balmy January temperatures between 45 and 50 degrees. It is early Monday morning, the beginning of the third week of the semester. Each day is starting to blur into the next as a comfortable routine has developed. My mornings begin with my cat sprawled outside my bedroom door staring at me with suspicious eyes. Over the next 14-16 hours, I exist in a fairly rigid schedule. The colorful balls in the air all have labels, which read: classes, research, tutoring, studying, ambassador, friend, roommate, climbing, cooking, chores, etc.

On deciding upon going to Fort Lewis I had two main thoughts: I wanted to grow intellectually and I wanted to grow creatively. Coming into college I had been writing hip-hop lyrics for about two and half years. Although I have taken my education seriously throughout my whole college career, I have also taken music seriously. The liberal arts degree that Fort Lewis provides opens up a lot of opportunities for creative individuals, like myself, to incorporate their creativity and passion into their schoolwork.

One of my favorite parts of going to school at Fort Lewis College is being able to live and work in such a beautiful natural environment. I feel so lucky to be able to rise each morning and see cloudy hues caress the mountains, the sun breaking free from the nights’ holding. I originally came to the college because everyone was so friendly when I visited and I loved how down to earth all the students were.
