Going beyond the classroom

I have had a lot of amazing opportunities at Fort Lewis College to explore my field of study beyond the classroom. I am an English Communication Major and throughout my time on the campus news magazine The Independent, I have moved through various positions. I started as a Print Reporter and I transitioned to become Online Manager and now for a year and a half I have been Editor in Chief. For three consecutive years I have participated in the Associate Collegiate Press (ACP) Convention; a journalism convention that is held in different cities every year.

Not being just a student

When I started at Fort Lewis College, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was always getting asked the same question over and over by everyone I met: what’s your major? There are so many different choices when you arrive: majors, minors, clubs, teams, and exciting things to choose from. I had no idea where to start. So, I went with what I was always told I excelled in: writing.

Knowing I have found the place for me

Everyone knows that common expression that time flies, and as I begin my fourth and final year at Fort Lewis College, this saying could not be more apparent. At the expense of sounding cliché, it seems like just yesterday that I was moving into my new dorm in Animas Hall. For the first time, I was seeing how my life was about to take off. But, looking back, I did not really know how phenomenal my experiences were going to be and how Durango was going to feel like my new home.
