Dear Fort Lewis College:

Since I was a young girl, my North Carolinan parents have reinforced the importance of writing thank you notes. With graduation next month, I am compiling letters for individuals who supported me at the college. However, I realize that it was not individuals who enabled my personal growth, but the entire Fort Lewis College Community.

Finding my community at Skyhawk Saturday

When I was a senior in high school, I only had one priority in mind: get out of the small town in New Mexico that I was from. I had lived in a small town my entire life, a place where everyone in town knows your family, where you can’t go to the store or a movie without seeing at least one person you know, and where nearly everyone knows your business.

The art of scholarships

Fact: College is expensive.

Myth: Scholarships are hard to get and not worth the time.

Truth: Anyone can get scholarships -- you just have to do it right.

As a senior in high school I knew I wanted to go to college, but I also knew I didn’t want to graduate and begin the rest of my life in debt. I was standing on this weird middle ground where I didn’t have the greatest grades and my family made just enough money that I didn’t qualify for huge grants.

Why I came to Fort Lewis College

My entire education prior to college was spent in the small town of South Haven, Michigan.  I had lived in the same small town my whole life and finally decided when the time came for my application to college, I wanted to go to a big school and get out of the small town feel, so I applied to Michigan State University, got accepted, and planned on moving there. In the late spring, I got a realization that the small town feel was for me, and a friend encouraged me to go to Fort Lewis, because she loved it so much here.
