One thing that I promised myself before I came to Fort Lewis College, before I even graduated from high school, was to not procrastinate with my assignments, readings, work obligations, menial tasks and any other daily activity you can imagine. Now, seven weeks into my first year as a college student, I have realized that this goal is easier said than done.
One would imagine that I might have settled into an all-too-familiar daily routine of a usual 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. schedule consisting of attending classes, study time, free time and extracurricular activities by now, correct? Actually, that answer is completely and entirely wrong.

When you think of summer, what are some things that pop into your head? Sunshine? Tanning? Hanging with friends? What about not showering for 10 days at a time? Living outside? Or even the forearm muscles of a champion? If you spend a summer doing trail work, option B will comprise your summer much more accurately. I worked for the Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) and blazed trails throughout the Southwest area.

It’s not a lie: Snyder B was the place to be. All the residents were always there. Even people who were not residents in Snyder B were always there. We mobbed over to dinner all together, we went camping all together, and we went out on the weekends all together. We had heard legends of Snyder B residents from the past and yearned to be college legends as well.

When I was a senior in high school, I only had one priority in mind: get out of the small town in New Mexico that I was from. I had lived in a small town my entire life, a place where everyone in town knows your family, where you can’t go to the store or a movie without seeing at least one person you know, and where nearly everyone knows your business.

What is it like to be a student at Fort Lewis College? In our "Day in the life" series, we'll explore student life at FLC through the eyes of our students. In this episode, Michaela, a sophomore, goes to an early morning yoga session, takes us to a class, lets us follow along as she gives a campus tour, hangs out with some friends, and goes to a club meeting.
